What Methods Can Be Used for Reference to Improve the Quality of PCD Cutting Tools?

Today, the price of PCD cutting tools is continuously decreasing. This is mainly due to the decrease in production costs and constant technological improvements. Additionally, the quality of the diamond grinding wheels used has significantly improved, leading to a greater decrease in costs. However, the quality of many cutting tools still has issues. Therefore, it is necessary to go through a certain process to quickly improve the overall quality.

PCD cutting tools offer batch production of high-strength diamonds with stable performance, coarse grains, and good thermal stability.

The quality grade, particle size, and concentration of diamonds play a crucial role in diamond tools. China has matured in the six-face small-tonnage, high-strength process of diamond synthesis. Improvements have also been made in the six-face top large-tonnage large-cavity process, and the synthesis of two-face top diamonds. The production of PCD milling cutter raw materials, such as powder catalytic synthesis, carbon, and mica blocks, has also been continuously improved. Therefore, it is completely possible to produce high-strength diamonds that have stable performance, coarse grains, and good thermal stability for the production of Chinese diamond tools.

The adoption of strong carbide-forming elements in PCD cutting tools enhances the diamond holding force.

  • Improve mechanical holding force. This is due to the shrinkage of metal powder during sintering, which creates compressive stress holding the diamond. The generation of compressive stress is caused by the different thermal expansion coefficients between diamond and the metal matrix, resulting from changes in volume during sintering or crystal formation and growth. Due to the limited yield strength of the matrix, the compressive stress and the mechanical holding force are limited.

  • Improve the quality of PCD cutting tools method: add a small amount of strong carbide-forming elements such as Cr, W, Mo, etc. to the powder. Due to their good wettability and affinity with diamond, carbides are formed at the interface of diamond and the matrix during sintering, achieving secondary bonding of diamond and enhancing the holding force.

  • The diamond surface is coated with a layer of strong carbides forming metal elements such as Cr, Ni, Ti, W, etc. This has been a commonly used process measure in recent years.

At the same time, due to the forward lean of the blade, the position of the chip breaking slot changes, and the space for the curls of iron chips becomes smaller. The improved interchangeable hole processing tools have a more durable blade and the wear resistance of PCD milling cutters can be improved by 2-3 times in actual processing.

Thus, the above methods are used to improve the quality of PCD cutting tools. By understanding this article, we believe that some knowledge of improving the quality of PCD cutting tools can be gained. This results in easier processing and significantly improved hole wall smoothness. It reduces production costs, improves work efficiency, and has market competitiveness.
