Quality Inspection of Diamond Micro Powder

1. What is diamond micro powder?

Generally, powdery materials with an abrasive particle size below 54 microns are micro powders, and those with a particle diameter of less than 5 microns are fine powders. The coarse powder of diameter above 3.5 microns is separated by sedimentation, and the mixture of diameter below 3.5 microns is separated by centrifugal.

Diamond micro powder is mainly used for accurate grinding, grinding and polishing of non-metallic hard and brittle materials. Generally, 0~0.5 microns to 6~12 microns materials are polished; 5~10 microns to 12~22 microns materials are grinded; 20~30 microns materials are coarsely grinded. Diamond micro powder can be mainly used in the following four ways:

(1) It is always direct applied as micro powder or processed into grinding paste, widely used in cutting tools, measuring tools, optical instruments, electronic devices and other precision parts made of cemented carbide, high alumina ceramics, optical glass, instrument gems, semiconductors and other materials. The surface finish can reach mirror effect.

(2) Diamond micro powder is widely used in the manufacture of fine grinding discs, super fine grinding discs and electroplating products.

(3) Diamond powder is the main raw material for making polycrystalline diamond sintered bodies, such as geology, petroleum drill bits, cutting tools, wire drawing dies, etc.

(4) It is used in the manufacture of grinding fluid and polishing fluid.

Diamond micro powder is mainly used for grinding and polishing. Controling particle size is particularly important. As long as there are oversize coarse particles, the workpiece will be scratched and the work of the previous process goes wasted. Therefore, the quality inspection of the powder is an important part of ensuring the quality of the powder. Only by taking it seriously can we produce high-quality micro powder to meet the needs of users.

2. Standards for quality testing of diamond micro powder

The quality inspection of diamond micro powder adopts the method specified in the national standard JB/T7990-2012, which mainly includes size range, particle size distribution, particle shape, impurity content, marking and packaging. The main particle sizes are M0/0.25 M0/0.5 M0/1 M0.5/1 M1/2 M2/4 M3/6 M4/8 M5/10 M6/12 M8/12 M8/16 M10/20 M15/25 M20/ 30 M25/35 M30/40 M35/55 M40/60 M50/70. The particle size range for special purposes is negotiated by the diamond powder suppliers and the buyers.

At present, there are many instruments available for measuring the particle size of micro powder, such as biological microscope, projection microscope, image analyzer, projection electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, coulter particle size analyzer, etc. When using a biological microscope to observe micro powders, choose an appropriate magnification. If you want to observe the fine powder of diameter below 1.5 microns,1500 or 2000 times iamges visualize better. The minimum observable diameter of fine powder for biological microscope is 0.25 microns. What's more, micro powders with diameter smaller than 0.25 microns are best observed by scanning electron microscope.
