What is Super Abrasive?

With their excellent grinding performance, superabrasive tools have now been widely used in all aspects of grinding technology, and they have already become the basis of the further development of ultra-precision grinding, high efficiency grinding, difficult-to-process material grinding, high-precision form grinding, grinding automation and unmanned technology.

As diamond and CBN abrasives are complementary to each other in machining materials, the machinable range of the abrasives composed of diamond and CBN abrasives is then greatly expanded. It covers almost all the processed materials including all kinds of materials with high hardness, high brittleness and high strength and toughness.

Diamond superabrasive tools are the best abrasive tools for grinding hard and brittle materials, such as cemented carbide, optical glass, ceramics and adjective stones. However, since this kind of superabrasive is easy to be carbonized at 700℃ to 800℃, it is not suitable for grinding steel materials and ultra-high-speed grinding. Fortunately, the emergence of CBN abrasives led to a revolution in grinding technology. Unlike diamond superabrasive, the solid CBN abrasive tools can withstand the high temperature from 1300℃ to 1400℃. Moreover, it also has high chemical inertness to iron group elements, good thermal conductivity, high removal rate when grinding steel materials, large grinding ratio, and long product life. Therefore, it is the best abrasive for grinding hardened steel, high-speed steel, high-strength steel, stainless steel, and heat-resistant alloys with high hardness and toughness. In addition, CBN abrasive tools are also suitable for ultra-high-speed grinding. The metal matrix CBN abrasive tools will not break even if the linear velocity exceeds 250m/s.

With the widespread use of CBN abrasive tools and the advent of various high-efficiency and high-performance CNC grinders in recent years, as well as the advancement of abrasive tool manufacturing technology, new abrasive tools with excellent performance, such as single-layer electroplating and high-temperature brazing, have now made their entrance into the industry, which in turn greatly prompted the development of grinding technology. And among the newly developed grinding technologies, the new high-efficiency point grinding process is definitely more popular among people.
