Analysis of Main Forms and Causes of Breakage of Cubic Boron Nitride Cutting Tools

Cubic boron nitride (CBN), another new type of superhard material after synthetic diamond, is a completely artificial synthetic material. Cubic boron nitride cutting tools, such as cubic boron nitride cutters, are prone to be torn at intermittent cutting. The breakage of cubic boron nitride cutting tools can be subdivided into early damage and late damage. The early damage of CBN turning inserts is the breakage that occurs at the beginning of cutting or shortly after cutting. Until then significant wear has not formed on front and flank surfaces. This type of damage is most common when cutting hard materials or at intermittent cutting. Late damage is caused by strain of the tool material after a certain period time of processing. The forms of brittle damage are as follows:

1. Tipping of cubic boron nitride cutting tools

This is the most common early damage when cutting steel and cast iron continuously or intermittently. It is a small gap on the cutting edge, either a few small gaps or a small piece of chip. Generally, the notch size is equal to or slightly larger than the feeding load. The tool with micro chipping within the allowable wear limit can continue to work.

2. Flaking of cubic boron nitride cutting tools

When end milling steel and casting iron, shell-like flaking is most common on the rake face. When end milling hardened steel (HRC58-65) with cubic boron nitride cutting tools, a large area of shell-like spalling may occur on the rake face. This possibility of this type of wear can be lowered by increasing the cutting speed, reducing the feed rate, and using inserts with negative chamfering and passivation of the cutting edge.

3. Fragmentaion of cubic boron nitride cutting tools

A small piece of chipping or a large piece of fracture damage on the cutting edge leads to malfunction. This type of damage often occurs when cubic boron nitride tools continuously cut high-hard materials or intermittently cut. When quenching hardened steel, small fragmentation can occur at the tip of the tool due to the high cutting speed. Usually, in this case, after being reground and repaired, the tool can be put into use again. However, if the cubic boron nitride tool intermittently turns (40MnNi3CrMo) low alloy steel, a large fracture will occur at the tip of the tool. In this case, the cubic boron nitride cutting tool cannot be reground due to the excessive impact load during intermittent cutting. Early breakage occurs occurs after a short time of cutting. Although the cutter can still continue to work, big fracture can occur due to material strain if not changing cutter in time.  As a professional and mature CBN manufacturer, Henan Eagle Abrasives Co., Ltd. can not only provide you with the highest quality cubic boron nitride cutting tools, but also CBN for sale.
