Comparison of Main Applications of Tungsten Steel Cutting Tools and PCD Cutting Tools

Where are tungsten cutters and PCD cutters mainly used? The cutters we usually use are usually carbide tungsten steel tools and diamond PCD cutters. Cutters of two different materials are often used in processing. What is the difference between the two tools, let's take a look.


Ⅰ. Tungsten cuuter tools


Tungsten steel (tungsten carbide) has a series of excellent properties such as high hardness, wear resistance, good strength and toughness, heat resistance and corrosion resistance, especially its high hardness and wear resistance, even at a temperature of 500 ° C. It remains basically unchanged, and still has a high hardness at 1000 °C.


The matrix of tungsten steel consists of two parts: one part is the hardening phase; the other part is the bonding metal. Binder metals are generally iron group metals, commonly used cobalt and nickel. The inclusion of tungsten in steel can significantly improve the hardness and heat resistance of steel, but the toughness will drop sharply. The main application of tungsten resources is also cemented carbide, that is, tungsten steel. Carbide, known as the teeth of modern industry, is widely used in tungsten steel products.


The main components of cemented carbide are tungsten carbide and cobalt, which account for 99% of all components, and 1% are other metals, so it is also called tungsten steel. Commonly used in high-precision machining, high-precision tool materials, lathes, impact drill bits, glass cutter bits, tile cutters, hard and not afraid of annealing, but brittle. It belongs to the rare metal.


Ⅱ. Diamond PCD cutter


1. The hardness of PCD can reach 8000HV, which is 8 to 12 times that of cemented carbide;


2. The thermal conductivity of PCD is 700W/mK, which is 1.5 to 9 times that of cemented carbide, even higher than that of PCBN and copper, so the heat transfer of PCD cutters is rapid;


3. The friction coefficient of PCD is generally only 0.1 to 0.3 (the friction coefficient of cemented carbide is 0.4 to 1), so PCD cutters can significantly reduce the cutting force;


4. The thermal expansion coefficient of PCD is only 0.9×10-6~1.18×10-6, which is only equivalent to 1/5 of cemented carbide, so PCD cutter has small thermal deformation and high machining accuracy;


5. The affinity between PCD cutters and non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials is very small, and the chips are not easy to stick to the tool tip to form a built-up edge during processing.


(1) Aerospace field


Compared with other materials, composite materials have the characteristics of light weight, high strength, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, etc., and become ideal materials in the aerospace field. With the wide application of aerospace composite materials, how to correctly select and rationally use tools for efficient and high-quality cutting processing is a very important issue. Among them, the proportion of PCD cutter materials is increasing. In today's aerospace manufacturing, the two have become the leading tools in the development of tools in the aerospace industry, with a wide range of applications.


(2) Automotive industry field


At present, the main object that automobile companies use PCD cutters to process is the aluminum alloy cylinder block of the engine. The application of PCD cutters covers almost all aluminum alloy parts processing fields of automobiles, including special stepped composite tools, cast aluminum and aluminum alloy processing taps, various high-precision hole composite reamers, composite drills, large-diameter drills, and difficult material processing. Drill bits and more. At present, domestic automobile enterprises such as FAW-Volkswagen have widely used PCD cutters to process aluminum alloy parts of automobiles (such as automobile aluminum alloy pistons and aluminum alloy wheels).
